Weaving Change: unspun's Zero-Waste Vision
Exploring On-Demand Manufacturing and 3D Weaving Revolution with Brand Lead Annika Visser
I’m really excited to feature unspun in this second August 2024 issue of Fafafoom Studio Newsletter! The revolutionary 3D weaving tech company has been making waves with innovations, partnerships, and most recently, $32M Series B funding round. As a big fan of unspun, I am always cheering for unspun’s continued success. Moreover, I’m very grateful that Annika Visser, unspun’s Brand Lead, agreed to do a Q&A. This is the second Industry Insight issue of 2024. This issue is free to all subscribers until September 2nd. Let’s get to it, shall we?

When I first learned about unspun in 2021, I found their approach in creating on-demand manufacturing for tailored jeans really innovative. The Oakland-based company, founded by Beth Esponnette, Walden Lam, and Kevin Martin, utilizes 3D scanning technology to create custom fit for every pair of jeans it produces. Even though I have yet to get a pair myself (because I have more than enough pairs in my wardrobe), I have only heard great things about their custom jeans.
Fast forward to 2024, unspun has continued to make great strides in their quest to disrupt manufacturing standards of the global apparel industry. Their “custom fit” momentum has refocused and evolved to Vega™, their 3D weaving technology that weaves yarns directly into the completed pieces of a garment.
True to its mission to “reduce global human carbon emissions by 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing for apparel,” unspun continues to develop their technology to shorten lead times; enabling brands and manufacturers to use their machines into existing supply chains for localized and automated production.
The company manifests scalable, on-demand apparel manufacturing that can become the new standard in the industry. How about responsible production of high quality, durable garments that can also be recycled into future garments?
Sounds cool, right? Let’s find out more about unspun and their innovative approaches from their Brand Lead, Annika Visser.
